In late October 1929, the mood of the nation changed suddenly and drastically when the stock market crashed, setting into motion a financial depression that would have an enormous impact on day-to-day life for the next ten years.
The hardships that this incurred on almost every American inadvertently made radio more important than ever. First, radio provided information and news to a population desperate for a solution to their problems. Most importantly, though, radio provided free entertainment for those who could afford little else. It provided solace and united our nation at a time of great difficulty.
