While Otis Redding was redefining the face and sound of soul music at Stax Records, Atlantic got busy trying to put Wilson Pickett at the same level.

With the hit songs that appear on “The Exciting Wilson Pickett”, they succeeded. Two of the album’s biggest hits were recorded at Stax Records, but Jim Stewart, the studio’s owner, banned any further work for outside labels, feeling that he was inadvertently supporting his own competition. To keep the southern soul sound that Pickett developed at Stax, Atlantic’s Jerry Wexler simply moved the following sessions to Rick Hall’s Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, where a different group of players not only matched the quality of the Stax sound, but took his sound to a new level. Sessions from both studios make up the bulk of  “The Exciting Wilson Pickett”. After its release, he became the new face of southern soul music.
