By 1970, Van Morrison already had a solid reputation as an influential singer/songwriter, but “Moondance” is the album that busted things wide open for him.

Before this album, he was seen as a mercurial character but “Moondance” suddenly grounded him in the mainstream. His previous album, ”Astral Weeks”, though stunningly beautiful, had been mostly ignored by music fans, as it relied heavily on intuition and spontaneity. This time Morrison collected a set of formally constructed songs, many of which would come to define his career, and it was a significant ‘about face’.

In an era when the singer/songwriters were starting to dominate the music industry, Morrison created one of the finest albums of that (or any) genre.
