After two solid years of unabated greatness, you would’ve had to be bulletproof to avoid the charm of the Beatles.

For Christmas 1965, the band released an album that was virtually undeniably great in just about every way. “Rubber Soul” added a large chunk of maturity to the band’s rock and roll sound, making their appeal universal, and even crossing generation barriers. Moms were humming along with “Michelle,” and even those who despised rock and roll music saw the undeniable beauty in a song like “In My Life.”

Never before or since, and very likely, never again, will the world witness a musical act to present such an incredible degree of musical growth in so short a timespan. Even those who resisted the Beatles – jazz fans, R&B fans, Brill Building songwriters, to name a few – could no longer justify their argument that the Beatles were responsible for ‘dumbing down’ popular culture. Quite literally, the Beatles reinvented culture as it happened, and the world followed suit.
