Despite her harsh beginnings, Billie quickly fit in with some of New York City’s finest musicians so easily that she made it seem – and sound – almost effortless to do so.

The music may have come easily, but the tough times continued. Being a black woman singing with a band of mostly white musicians, she quickly discovered that America was not prepared for the integration that she represented, and she had to fight her way through to continue and hold on to her status as one of the most revered vocalists of the late ‘30s.

Hopefully, this show captures some of that feeling.
