Okay, it’s no big secret that Cream is not my favorite band. For reasons I don’t know myself, I somehow survived the sixties without ever falling under the sway of this band. Their brand of the blues didn’t appeal to me, especially when their self-indulgence took lead over common sense.

This album in particular plays to those faults, but it is also the band’s most accessible record. There’s a handful of very good songs here, and the jams that feature Clapton are genuinely interesting. Unfortunately, everything is stretched to double album proportions by adding songs that are forgettable at best (“Pressed Rat and Warthog”), or a genuine waste of a quarter-hour (“Toad”).

Still in all, I would feel remiss if I let my own prejudices stand in the way of acknowledging one of rock’s most legendary groups that is still respected fifty years on. Begrudgingly, I must acknowledge Cream’s importance, and also that “Wheels of Fire” qualifies as the best album that band ever made.
