Run DMC
Man, talk about your old school…This live performance is the hip-hop equivalent of Rick Nelson’s “Garden Party,” except that the crowd applauds. Recorded in 2001, Run DMC were virtually an oldies act by then, but they never come off like dinosaurs. This show features incredibly high-energy versions of their greatest hits, for an appreciative audience in Montreux, Switzerland (the crowd is almost exclusively white). Actually, this show says a lot for old school styles, because the energy is so much more focused that the post-gangsta ramblings of latter-day rap shows.
Another disconcerting but ultimately touching and impressive feature is seeing Jam Master Jay working the crowd as though he were at the top of his game. In another year, his murder would cause the entire hip-hop community to once again question the reasons for the violence that haunts the genre, but in 2001, he was DJ-ing as if it were 1984. Yeah, he spends a little too much time doing the “wicky wicky,” while DMC and Run spend a lot of energy bragging on how great they still are, but like I said, this is old school, and that is the old-school way. Besides, I know that you would have been on your feet for the entire performance, if only you could have been there.
Well, this is a close second. I’ll give the CD a slight edge over the DVD, because it is edited for maximum aural impact, but the video flows well too. If you are a fan of old school rap, Run DMC is as good as it gets. Long live Run DMC, and long live the memory of Jam Master Jay. B+ Tom Ryan
