Pat Green
There’s a new breed of singer/songwriter that can cross genres with ease while retaining their appeal across virtually all lines. My first run-in with this type of musician was Marc Broussard, and now there’s Pat Green. The basic premise of this type of stylist is to write songs that are instantly appealing, songs that would sound as good in a roadhouse bar as they would blasting out of an El Camino. These days, I guess you would classify Green as a ‘country’ artist, but his music appeals way beyond those boundaries, crossing easily into MOR rock and roll, with a touch of blue-eyed soul. I also think it would be a mistake to lump Green in with the rest of the ‘new country’ breed, because he avoids the common pitfalls that tend to compromise the integrity of a Billy Ray Cyrus or a Shania Twain. Green’s music has as much in common with Bryan Adams and John Hiatt as it does with Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith, and he’s honest about it. Best of all, he writes songs that would easily appeal to fans of Adams, Hiatt, Chesney, Keith, Cyrus or Twain.
“Way Back Texas” is a perfect representative track from the album, containing heartfelt lyrics and a soaring chorus that any songwriter would kill for. Then again, it’s hard to find a song that doesn’t fit this description; “Feels Just Like It Should” has a hook as big as Kansas, and “Cannonball” simply deserves to be a huge crossover hit. As for reflective songs, about days gone by they don’t get much more potent than “Trying to Find It,” while “Sleeping with the Lights On” is sad enough to give you insomnia. With nearly a dozen albums under his belt, Green is no newcomer to the scene, but he may be a newcomer to you. I’d suggest it’s time for you to catch up with this guy.
