The music world has lost another legend. Who bassist John Entwistle died on Thursday. The 57 year old was found in his Las Vegas hotel room. The cause of death is an apparent heart attack. The Who were scheduled to start a major North American tour on Friday with opener Robert Plant. No word yet on the status of the trek.
Since his death, friends and bandmates alike have had nothing but praise for Entwistle. Remaining Who members Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend have issued this statement: "The Ox has left the building — we've lost another great friend."
Drummer Keith Moon died in 1978. Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman described Entwistle as "the quietest man in private but the loudest man on stage… he was unique and irreplaceable."
I’d like to think of Entwistle as the backbone of The Who. Sure the band had a dynamic frontman, a crazy drummer and a star guitarist, but it was Entwistle who held it all together. You’d have to be talented to keep up with Moon! And it was Entwistle who had the first real bass solo in rock. Who shines on my generation? That’s right, Entwistle!
On a related note, I was supposed to see The Who this summer at Jones Beach. Part of me wants the show to go on and part of me doesn’t. I think if the band decides to tour, I know it would be what Entwistle wanted. And I also know it won’t be the same!
Tune into WHPC, 90.3 FM, on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Tom Ryan and myself will take a look back at the life and music of John Entwistle.
