Sugar Ray
In the late ‘90s, Sugar Ray did the best job of keeping us supplied with up-beat, top-down summer tunes. “Fly,” “Someday” and “Every Morning” were near perfect concoctions of sunshine and sand, and no summer party was complete without these songs getting their fair share of airplay. Sugar Ray know what they do best, and this disk wastes no time AT ALL renewing your faith in their relevance. Within the first two seconds of hitting ‘play’, you hear the band harmonizing on the word “summer,” and all the sweet feelings of summers past come rushing back. From there, the songs roll by like a classic convertible cruising down the main drag.
Of course, this disk contains all of the requisite hits, and it also throws in a few new tunes for good measure. “Shot of Laughter” is the previously un-issued lead-off track, and it deserves to be the summer party track of 2005. There’s an undeniable vibe here that never lets up, including credible cover versions of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” and Joe Jackson’s “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” Good summer music is a rare commodity, and I almost forgot about Sugar Ray for a while there. The booklet that comes with this hits collection is guaranteed to fade in the sun, because this CD is destined to remain on the front seat of my car all summer long.
