Concert Review Aerosmith at Jones Beach, Wantagh, NY August 28th, 2002

Aerosmith

"Angel", "Janie’s Got A Gun" and "Love In An Elevator" are some of the hits you will not hear on this summer’s Aerosmith tour. What you will hear are songs from The Seventies that sound tired and are old. To know what I’m talking about, let’s take a look back the history of these Boston rockers.

Aerosmith was formed in 1970 as the American answer to The Rolling Stones (which they are not). The band includes energetic Singer Steven Tyler and Guitarist Joe Perry. Aerosmith had a bumpy road in the era, but did produce some hits. "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion" are two such classics. Inner strife and drug turmoil ultimately put the guys on the fast track to rock ‘n’ roll hell. Aerosmith’s career was all but dead until 1986. That’s when Producer Rick Rubin convinced Run-DMC to cover "Walk This Way". Tyler and Perry soon joined the recording and the rest is his history. Aerosmith have since gone on to multi-platinum success with the albums "Permanent Vacation", "Pump" and "Get A Grip".

Now here’s the problem with Aerosmith’s current summer trek. Why cover obscure material from The Seventies? If you’re more successful in The Eighties and Nineties then doesn’t it make sense to focus on that catalog? I want to hear "Amazing" not "Draw The Line". And guys forget "Girls Of Summer"! The single was recorded for a greatest hits compilation, enough said.

I think the guys in Aerosmith are great musicians with a fantastic frontman. The only problem is that they are a little misguided. A set list change would do this band wonders. Hey guys, let the fans vote on your set list. It will make for a more enjoyable experience.
