I just can’t seem to get enough of this guy; the more I hear, the more I want to hear.
This disk is subtitled ‘#1 in the Fading Captain series’, whatever the hell that means. It does imply that there will be much more, though, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s a damn good thing. Personally, I don’t know how Pollard finds the time. Between his group, Guided By Voices, his solo stuff and his bizarro off-shoot projects, he’s good for about five albums a year. How many people can say that? Even crazier, most of them are artistically valid, musically interesting and creative; how many people can say that? Pollard is a one-man music machine, and this disk is as good a place to start as any, if you care to find out what he’s about.
Kid Marine contains fifteen fully realized tunes, which is an oddity in itself, since Pollard often lurks about in extra-musical territory that can frighten away the lighthearted. Except for the lyrics, the songs herein are almost normal, although they defy your standard verse-chorus-verse structure. And speaking of lyrics, you can either think of them as psychobabble or as poetry.
Here’s a sample;
"A perfume not over-hyped
The cakemaker never fails to stun me
As I glow in television prison…" (from "Enjoy Jerusalem!")
Or this, which is actually the entirety of a song called "Snatch Candy";
"File it under milestones
Men who pay the price
Flings of the waistcoat crowd
The grooms have hit ice
Dead father-type husbands
Have given them a world
A care-free world
Sugarless."
Make of it what you will, but I love it. I think if you make the effort to play this disk four or five times, you’ll agree with me, too.
