Let it be known that I am quite the fan of Townes Van Zandt. That being said, there is little reason for anyone other than fanatics to own this disk. Although this is not made clear on the disk’s cover, "Documentary" is literally a recording of a rather lackluster interview with Van Zandt, interspersed with credible but hardly definitive versions of his best-known songs. In other words, it really is a documentary, not a collection of music called "Documentary."
Although he knew the man, the dry style of interviewer Larry Monroe limits Van Zant, leaving us with a verbal exchange that fails to capture the humor and magnetic appeal of this legend. Released posthumously, it does have some worth, but only to those who already know the value of Van Zandt’s legacy as a songwriter and performer.
