Gorillaz
One word can describe this show: bizarre. It's no wonder that MTV2 is sponsoring Gorillaz concert tour. I mean here's a band where the visuals are just as important as the sound, maybe even more important.
The concept for Gorillaz tour is this: you watch cartoon clips as the band plays behind a screen. Does it work? Well, the curiosity of the whole thing brings you into the concert, but eventually you want to see the band. I mean seeing their silhouettes behind the screen started to get annoying. Don't get me wrong, the visuals are great and so is the music. However, this show should be packaged as trippy DVD or something. I can even see MTV2 playing it late at night.
With that said, there were a couple of highlights. I loved the way the visuals and music mixed on the tracks "5/4" and "Clint Eastwood". And Gorillaz must have as well. Get this; the band performed the same two numbers again as their encores. I mean c'mon play something else! Who wants to see a show and hear the same songs twice? I know Gorillaz only has one album, but play some new material or just end the concert!
Speaking of strange, the weirdest part of the evening came with Gorillaz "Song For New York". Damon Albarn and company stayed behind the screen while the rap group D12 hit the stage. They’re Eminem's side project. And they came complete with a Buddha. Yeah, a 350 pound rapper with his shirt off!
So, what can one take from all of this? If you go see Gorillaz anytime soon, be prepared for a strange evening. Personally, wait for the DVD!
