Sonny Rollins
Few artists have done more to further the art of soloing than Sonny Rollins. He took his talent and used it as a personal, intelligent and expressive means of communicating emotion, and he probably did this better than any other saxophone player in the past forty years. It’s remarkable to consider that such an overwhelming talent could have been so tough on himself as to retreat from the music industry, not once, but twice, but he used these sabbaticals to find new ways of satisfying himself, and we all benefited from it.
Since his career spans such a long period of time (1950 to the present) it is almost impossible to find a single disk that represents the many phases and stages of Sonny Rollins. Even on this disk, a paltry eleven tracks are all that can fit onto the CD, but they are an incredible eleven, and absolutely worth every minute of your attention, especially if you aren’t familiar with Rollins. For a man who has played with everyone from Miles Davis ("Oleo", appears on this disk) to the Rolling Stones ("Waiting on a Friend"), this is a great starting point.
