To many, Bela Fleck is a modern day Earl Scruggs, faithfully picking his way through a field of bluegrass. Few realize however, that this banjo/guitar player is the only musician to be nominated for Grammys in jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, spoken word, Christian, composition and world music categories.
On his latest tour -- {seen in the intimate IMAC in Huntington, NY} -- Bela leaves the confines of the Americana music scene behind, collaborating with his longtime friend, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer. The result... a night of music from the likes of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and others. The tour, supporting his latest release Perpetual Motion, shows the five-time Grammy winner comfortably interpreting songs from the great masters. His rendition of these timeless classics on his good old pre-war Gibson, accompanied by Meyer on stand-up bass and piano, shows that great music knows no instrumental boundaries.
I will confess that I was not well versed in Bela (pronounced Bay-la) Fleck's style of music before the show, so I did not have any preconceived notions about what I was going to hear. That being said, his foray into classical expression seemed as natural as if he'd been playing that way for years. The fluidity of his picking and the timbre of his and Edgar's instruments gave the audience a truly unique listening experience. Even the diehard Fleck-heads embraced this journey, although they did politely and consistently call out for old favorites like Sinister Minister and Outbound . The gracious host acknowledged these wayward souls with a smile and simply stated; "that's for another time and another space".
My advice is to catch this space if you can.
