Just in time for the holidays The Barenaked Ladies are back with "Disc One: All The Greatest Hits 1991-2001". The American Hit Network recently spoke with the guys about their latest Warner Bros. disc before they hit the road for 7 shows across the United States.
AHN: Why a greatest hits album?
Ed Robertson: So many goddamn hits.
Tyler Stewart: We’ve been saturating the airwaves of America, for what, about a year now, so we decided to put out a greatest hits to celebrate that.
Ed: Seriously, we’ve been a band for over a decade and we’ve got lots of records that
a lot people aren’t aware of… some that were hits in other countries and we thought it was a neat way to put out a retrospective for people.
AHN: Did the record company come to you guys or did you go them about the album?
Steven Page: I think it might have been our idea, but I think they had the same idea as us.
AHN: Who came up with the tracklist for hits?
Steven: We chose all the songs that were singles and I came up with the sequence.
Ed: There are 2 new songs.
Tyler: "Stairway To Heaven" and "Hells Bells" are the new songs?
AHN: Really?
AHN: Were the new songs recorded for "Maroon" or just recorded for the greatest hits?
Tyler: One was recorded for "Zeppelin 4"
AHN: Really?
Tyler: The other for "Back In Black".
Jim Creeggan: They were recorded for the greatest hits.
AHN: Favorite track on greatest hits?
Tyler: I’m going to go "Old Apartment". Every time I hear it, I’m interested in hearing it still. That’s a song from our ’96 album, "Born On A Pirate Ship".
Ed: I’m going to go with the brand new, "It’s Only Me (The Wizard Of Magicland)" because it has the words "Wizard Of Magicland" in the title.
Steven: I’m with Ed on that one.
Kevin Hearn: I’m Still Liking "Falling For The First Time".
AHN: That’s my favorite track too.
Jim: "Call And Answer".
AHN: Any plans to make a new studio album soon?
Ed: Next year, we’re going to start writing in the new year and hopefully have something out by the end of the year.
AHN: What are you doing in the meantime?
Ed: We might do things different this time, we’re talking about doing lots of playing even while we’re off and maybe do some writing together, we’ll see how it goes.
Tyler: Hanging out with our children, hanging out with our with our wives, hanging out with The Rolling Stones.
AHN: Hey, the new Mick Jagger album is supposed to be great!
Ed: Hanging out with Brad and Gwyneth and rollin’ on over to Bell Aire and partying with Moby.
AHN: Final question…what are you guys listening to now?
Tyler: I’ve been listening to a lot of Canadian music. A lot of our peers… like
Gordon Downie from the "Tragically Hip", a woman named Sarah Harmer and a band called The Flashing Lights, a lot of local Toronto stuff. All of these people have web sites, you should check them out.
AHN: I see them on MuchMusic.
Tyler: A great Canadian scene happening right now.
Ed: You know what I’ve been listening too, I’ve been meaning to tell you this. I watched this great documentary about Tuvan throat singing, a movie called "Ganghis Blues". This musician, a blind American blues musician named Paul Pena, went to Tuva to compete in the throat singing contest. I picked up a record of his, a retrospective of his stuff, and it’s charming my ass off. It’s a great record.
Tyler: He wrote "Big Old Air Jetliner" by the Steve Miller Band.
Steven: I like that Strokes record. I like the vibe, the sounds on it.
Kevin: I just got two new turntables, so I’ve been listening to all my old records, The Velvet Underground and a band from New York called, The Thunder Loafs.
Jim: I’ve been listening to a lot of Latin music, Kachow.
Kevin: Gesundheit.
Jim: Jim White has a new record…
AHN: "No Such Place."
Jim: Yeah.
AHN: That’s a great record.
Tyler: That is a great record. It’s a year old now, but an awesome album.
Jim: I also really like the new John Hiatt "The Tiki Bar Is Open". It’s really good.
AHN: Well, thanks guys. It’s really been a pleasure.
You can check out more on The Barenaked Ladies at their web site, www.bnlmusic.com
