Chris Whitley
Anybody expecting the atmospherics of Whitley’s first radio hit, "Big Sky Country," is in for a surprise when they first hear Din of Ecstasy. There might be a certain type of genius at work here, but it’s buried deep under dense and abrasive playing that the production makes no attempt to fix. There’s not much melody, and the claustrophobic atmosphere created by the band causes the songs to bleed together, making it difficult to discern one from another. At times, Whitley and his bandmates sound like they are strangling their instruments with a white-knuckled grip. Or, maybe, they’re holding on for dear life. Whitley’s slide playing on Din of Ecstasy sounds desperate and cathartic, but a little bit more breathing room would have been nice.
