Hiatt Comes Alive at Budokan
Yes, this is a live album, but no, it was NOT recorded at Budokan. Take a second look at the title and you’ll realize that Hiatt chose to string together the titles of two incredible-selling live records (Peter Frampton and Cheap Trick), perhaps hoping that the magic would rub off. It doesn’t, but that’s not to say that this isn’t a good record. Most live disks are serviceable souvenirs with little lasting value, but Hiatt and the Guilty Dogs do better. This four-piece band, including Hiatt, does an excellent job of interpreting a generous collection of some of his best-known songs, with a precision that nearly matches the studio versions and an energy that often surpasses them. While I’d still opt for the studio recordings in most cases, this live collection is a great introduction to one of America’s best songwriters.
Highlights – "Your Dad Did", "Thing Called Love", "Feels Like Rain"
