Modest Mouse
Alternative music sometimes strikes me as ridiculous. Take a quirky idea, drive it into the ground until people begin to read meaning into the benign eccentricities, and voila, alternative college hit. Sometimes ‘original experimentation’ is astounding, but most of the time it just gets more annoying. To my ears, Modest Mouse sound like what might have happened if Camper Van Beethoven were Nektar fans. There are some good lyrics ("Laugh hard, it’s a long way to the bank," from "Paper Thin Walls, and "If you could be anything you want, I bet you’d be disappointed," from "Lives." stand out), but they make as much sense excerpted as they do in the context of the song. The music sounds like it is desperately trying to be unique, or maybe progressive, but falling short, while the words don’t really seem to mean anything either. At times, things seem to work, but ultimately, none of it seems to mean anything.
