The Old 97’s are all right in my book. Their songs have a bright energy and their melodies can be downright infectious, while their lyrics are always interesting and usually amusing. These days, it’s tough for a four-piece band that sticks pretty close to a live, natural sound to find its own niche, but these songs are clever enough to stand on their own. Songs like "Buick City Complex" and "Designs On You" have hooks that never let go, while the alternative country sound of "Bird in a Cage"and "What I Wouldn’t Do" crackle with energy. These guys deserve fame as much as anybody.
Buy the CD, and try to find the version with the bonus live disk featuring six extra tracks. All of ‘em are good.
