Nobody Else
Imagine a less manipulated, English version of the Backstreet Boys with a lead singer that writes all of the material, and you’ll have a pretty clear picture of what these guys are about. The trick, though, is that Gary Barlow is actually a pretty good songwriter, and sometimes he’s flat out excellent. The hit song here, "Back For Good", is one of my favorite singles of 1995, sounding for all the world like a forgotten classic by Daryl Hall and John Oates. The rest of the album doesn’t quite rise to the same level, but at least it avoids the insipid cliches that most boy-bands unwittingly toss off.
