Van Morrison/Linda Gail Lewis
It’s back to the bars for Van Morrison and Jerry Lee Lewis’ sister, Linda Gail. Heck, I read Nick Tosches’ "Hellfire" and still didn’t know that Jerry Lee had a piano playing sister, but damn if she doesn’t pound the keys a lot like her much more famous brother. Leave it Van Morrison to delve into his roots by sharing the bill with her. This is bar music at its most pure and simple. The disk is full of familiar roots-rock country and soul classics, with a repertoire much like every roadhouse band from here to Memphis. You can almost see the stage and taste the beer as they duet on tracks by Hank Williams, John Lee Hooker and Otis Blackwell. It may not be art, but it’s great listening if you’re having more than one.
