At the height of Beatlemania, there was a significant advantage to being British as opposed to American.
In England, the record label obeyed the Beatles wishes to provide better value to their fans, and each Beatles album to date featured 13 to 14 songs each of original Beatles material. However, Capitol Records, the American label, saw fit to do whatever it pleased, and what pleased it most was making as much money as possible, regardless of the Beatles best intentions. So, while the British version of the “Help!” contained 14 new songs, the American soundtrack only contained the seven songs featured in the film. The remaining seven tracks were randomly spread out over a variety of albums, including such Capitol Records concoctions as “Beatles VI,” “Yesterday and Today” and even a re-sequenced version of “Rubber Soul”.
For that reason, it is actually difficult for American fans who lived through this era to equate “I’ve Just Seen a Face” with “Help!”, because in America, that was the lead-in track for “Rubber Soul”! In America, “Yesterday” and “Act Naturally” were available only as a single until Capitol further ‘butchered’ the Beatles plans by inventing a collection of songs entitled “Yesterday and Today” and dropping both songs onto side one, along with other songs that were hacked off of the British version of “Revolver.” For the sake of simplicity, we will approach these tracks as the Beatles intended them to be heard, so this show is dedicated to side two of the British album ”Help!” Songs include;
