Like Part 12, this show captures a period of transition for the label -- the timeframe where Motown began to realize that it was trying too hard to be everything to everybody.
We have a hit or two in this lineup, but not at the rate that a casual listener might associate with Motown. The label expected more of itself as well, and began to pull back and concentrate on its strengths, which would soon prove to be quite significant.
Whatever you do, make sure you follow up by listening to the soon to be posted Part 14, when we see just how well that philosophy would pay off. Meanwhile, here’s a list of titles covered in this program;
1) First You’ve Got to Recognize God – The Burnadettes
2) Fingertips, Pt. 1 – Little Stevie Wonder
3) Fingertips, Pt. 2 – Little Stevie Wonder
4) I’m Hooked – Bunny Paul
5) Going Steady Anniversary – The Stylers
6) 99 ½ Won’t Do – The Wright Specials
7) Pa (I Need a Car) – The Contours
8) My Daily Prayer – Amos Milburn
9) A Breath Taking Guy – The Supremes
10) What Goes Up Must Come Down – Holland and Dozier
