The Time Was December 1971: Hunky Dory - David Bowie

episode date - December 14, 2011

Once again, we are confronted with an embarrassment of riches for classic material from 40 years ago. Rather than play excerpts, this month we decided that it may be fun to play an entire album for each program, especially since there are so many great records that deserve reconsideration.

We start this series with David Bowie’s “Hunky Dory.” It was the first fully realized album that Bowie had released, and it came at a time before Bowie had fully embraced the glam stylings that were starting to develop. Chock full of memorable songs and extraordinary arrangements, this is the album that served as a harbinger of things to come.

Songs featured:

Changes

Oh! You Pretty Things

Eight Line Poem

Life on Mars?

Kooks

Quicksand

Fill Your Heart

Andy Warhol

Song for Bob Dylan

Queen Bitch

The Bewlay Brothers
