I met the guys from Butcher’s Blind after a mutual friend brought them to my attention. I was organizing a special event that featured the music of Buffalo Springfield, and wanted to bring in some new blood to make the event feel vibrant and new, and they were up for it.
I was impressed, because there are not many young musicians who have much interest in music history, and yet these guys seemed as comfortable with this forty-year-old music as I was. Pete and Brian made a bunch of rehearsals, drank some beers and hung out and watched while the crazy bits and pieces for the event slowly came together. I could tell that Pete and Brian were both itching to jump in, especially when things started to gel.
To make a long story short, the Buffalo Springfield event came off just fine. The thing is, Butcher’s Blind performed a set before the ‘main event’, and they blew the crowd away. With a natural ease that defied their ages, they played original material that sounded ageless, and kept the crowd humming. If you hear their CD, you’ll see exactly what I mean. Or, you could just listen to them perform on this program and you’ll get a taste of what I saw on that special night.
We have a few more upcoming events (a tribute to John Lennon will take place on September 18), and I personally can’t wait to work with these guys again.
