Taking the Bad with the Good - Springtime in 1980
In today’s show we go back thirty years to see what the music scene looked like at the same time in 1980. From my perspective, the difference in pop music and album tracks could not have been more starkly opposed than it was during this era. The top 40 was in such miserable condition that it’s a wonder people bought any of this stuff at all. Meanwhile, great albums were dropping at the rate of 3 per week.
We start our show with an appalling overview of a few singles from Spring-time 1980. When we can no longer stand the pain, we switch to album tracks. The fact is that there aren’t enough good singles from this era to fill even a quarter of an hour of our show, but there are so many album tracks that we will need to continue this topic next week, and we’ll dedicate that show entirely to as many of awesome album tracks as we can fit.
Meanwhile, let’s suffer together as we play (in whole, or at times, mercifully edited);
1) It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me – Billy Joel
2) Steal a Song… (I mean “Steal Away”) – Robbie Dupree
3) Should’ve Never Let You Go – Neil and Dara Sedaka
4) Answering Machine – Rupert Holmes…
…and now the good stuff…
5) Shining Star – The Manhattans
6) The Lord Will Make a Way – Al Green
7) No Self Control – Peter Gabriel
8) Biko – Peter Gabriel
9) TV Set – The Cramps
10) What’s Behind the Mask – The Cramps
11) Rough Boys – Pete Townshend
12) A Little Is Enough – Pete Townshend
