The Time Was 1970: Singles from Memorial Day Weekend

episode date - May 26, 2010

As the sixties faded into a memory, the hit single still held sway in the early ‘70s. By 1970, the general appeal of the peace and love movement had gone mainstream, infiltrating every aspect of our culture, including soda commercials, which is why a song as syrupy sweet as “Everything Is Beautiful” could be universally appealing, and enjoy such widespread success.

Rock music was in top form, too, while R&B was enjoying a crossover appeal unlike anything seen since then. More than anything, a show like this makes me nostalgic not only for the music itself, but for a time when such diverse music could share the airwaves, often without even changing the dial.

Songs featured in today’s program include;

1) Up Around the Bend – CCR

2) Run Through the Jungle – CCR

3) Question – The Moody Blues

4) Lay Down (Candles In the Rain) – Melanie

5) Ride Captain Ride – Blues Image

6) Band of Gold – Freda Payne

7) Hitchin’ a Ride – Vanity Fare

8) Mama Told Me Not to Come – Three Dog Night

9) Mississippi Queen – Mountain

10) Spill the Wine – Eric Burdon & War

11) United We Stand - Brotherhood of Man

12) Everything Is Beautiful – Ray Stevens
