episode date - February 17, 2010
Actually, the premise that the albums featured in this program date from February 1970 is technically inaccurate. The official release dates for both albums were in November of 1969, but slow initial sales meant that neither album charted until February of the following year, thus our date of February 1970.
The "Allman Brothers Band" and “Live Dead" by the Grateful Dead were both considered ‘cult’ albums at the time of their release, generating interest only among a few rabid fans. However, the reputations of both bands grew exponentially as time passed, and they each came to represent the best jam-style, free-form music that rock and roll could offer.
Forty years later, their influential status is impeccable, and permanently cemented their reputations as premier live acts. Here are a few featured tracks from each release;
1) Don’t Want You No More/It’s Not My Cross to Bear – Allman Brothers Band
2) Dreams I’ll Never See – Allman Brothers Band
3) Whipping Post – Allman Brothers Band
4) St. Stephen – The Grateful Dead
5) Dark Star - The Grateful Dead
