Nobody would ever accuse me of listening to too much music from the 1990’s. To be blunt, it’s a decade that I’d just as soon forget, at least as far as ‘pop’ music is concerned. Any decade that allows Michael Bolton to be one of its best-selling musical performers (I cannot refer to him as an ‘artist’) is bound to be lacking, and I’m afraid that this show highlights some of the decade’s shortcomings.
When writing the book “American Hit Radio,” it was imperative for me to choose the best top 40 pop songs from this decade, but the simple truth is that there weren’t very many that qualified as ‘timeless’. This show highlights some of the difficulties that I had while attempting to determine which songs might sound good 10 or 15 years into the future. Luckily, I believe that a few do still hold up. Want to know which ones? Listen and you can find out.
And just to show how fast these things can change, I’ve already changed my opinion regarding then relevance of Alice In Chains, particularly in comparison to the Lindsay Buckingham track I chose. If I had the chance, I would definitely have played an Alice In Chains track instead, but hey, that’s the point of this show. We all need to remain open minded and willing to change our minds, right?
………………Right?…
Here’s a list of the songs we cover over the course of this program:
1) Why? – Annie Lennox
2) End of the Road – Boyz II Men
3) All I Want - Toad the Wet Sprocket
4) Even Better Than the Real Thing – U2
5) That Train Don’t Stop Here – Los Lobos (Album Track)
6) Soul Drifter – Lindsay Buckingham (Album Track…see above)
