From the hard drivin' beat of Gimme Some Lovin' to the conga-esque percussion on Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory , and everywhere in between -- Jim Capaldi provided the foundation -- for one of rock's most quintessential and enigmatic bands ever to emerge from the 60's - Traffic. The group - consisting of core members Chris Wood, Dave Mason and Steve Winwood - made a major impact on the 60's and 70's British rock scene.
On January 28th, stomach cancer claimed his life at age 60. His untimely death ended an anticipated reunion with his longtime roadmate, Winwood - and possibly their erstwhile Traffic bandmate, Mason.
Although known for his drumming, Capaldi wrote many of the lyrics to Traffic's most succesful songs; Dear Mr. Fantasy, Freedom Rider, Light Up or Leave Me Alone, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Forty Thousand Headmen.
Capaldi never "retired" after the original Traffic broke up, starting a solo career in 1972 that would yield over 13 albums and numerous gigs a sessionman/producer/songwriter.
For Capaldi, playing live was his passion. When old acquaintences said "let's roll" -- as Winwood did in 1994 and then Mason in 1998 -- he would dust off the skins, clear his throat and let it rip just like old times.
